This weekend, Dr. Duane Sands presented the document describing eight statements about how the substance should be treated in a legalized framework.

"The time has come to reevaluate our position on cannabis given the scientific evidence that supports its medicinal value in several disease states and shows its potential in others," the report said. “We can no longer allow the history of marijuana to eclipse the benefits of cannabis in the future. "The Bahamas could contribute to the set of research that will determine how the medical community uses cannabis."
The National Marijuana Commission of the Bahamas is conducting a major public survey on whether cannabis should be legalized in mid-April.

Commissioners must first decide whether to use the Statistics Department or turn to a private company to conduct the survey. Co-President Quinn McCartney said he should have the survey list and the pollsters within the next two weeks.

"I would say that at the beginning of March and that should be a four to six week process, so by mid-April we should have finished the survey," McCartney said.

A 2018 survey found that 71% of Bahamians were in favor of the legalization of recreational marijuana.

The BNCM advised the government to allow people with medicinal cannabis prescriptions to grow plants for use; to allow tourists who are prescribed medical cannabis in their countries what they get in The Bahamas; and to allow the import of cannabis products regulated for ailments.

Possession of cannabis would be decriminalized for the first time for personal use by persons over 21 years of age. And the laws would be amended for the immediate removal of criminal records of small possession.

McCartney said last week: "We have given it to the government and we have a small piece to complete." "Now it is up to the government to make its decision in terms of the way forward that they would like to follow"

"Our survey will add additional information to help you make decisions, but in your mayor the majority of our work is completed."

With these steps towards cannabis reforms, The Bahamas aligns with the countries of the Caribbean, San Cristobal and Nieves.
