Se ha abierto en Portugal la primera fábrica de cannabis para uso medicinal, aún no disponen de la autorización para la venta, pero la plantación ya está en marcha. El presidente ejecutivo de la multinacional anunció que comenzarán a exportar a partir del próximo verano.
Tilray, la segunda empresa más poderosa del cannabis mundial, tiene a
Portugal como centro operativo para Europa. Al norte de Lisboa, en el
pueblo de Cantanhede, 24.000 metros cuadrados de terrenos están rodeados
de alambradas y rejas. En su interior crece la hierba, una hierba
fuertemente vigilada, entre estufas y plásticos. Es una plantación de
cannabis que crece gracias a la licencia que la Autoridad portuguesa del
Medicamento y los Productos de Salud, Infarmed concedió en 2017 a
Tilray para cultivar, importar y exportar cannabis medicinal a granel.
Las instalaciones de Tilray, aparte de los sembrados y sus invernaderos,
incluyen laboratorios y plantas de procesamiento. De momento, la
multinacional, con relaciones con la farmacéutica Novartis, solo trabaja
en la siembra y cosecha, a la espera de que la Unión Europea le
autorice la producción de medicamentos y así comenzar a extraer los
componentes de las plantas. Según Kennedy, la licencia llegará este
mismo año.
La fábrica ya da trabajo a más de un centenar de personas, que se
duplicará a final de 2019. Hasta ahora la inversión ha sido de 20
millones de euros, según dijo su presidente ejecutivo. El Parlamento Portugués aprobó el año pasado el uso terapéutico, votando a favor todos los grupos políticos excepto el derechista CDS que se abstuvo.
En España, aunque la Agencia del Medicamento rechaza el uso medicinal
del cannabis, ha autorizado a una compañía española Linneo Health, a cultivar y producir cannabis para
su exportación. En 2017, cerró un acuerdo con la canadiense Canopy, la
primera multinacional de la marihuana, para suministrarle durante tres
años materia prima y el principio activo purificado del cannabis para
usos farmacéuticos.

The first cannabis factory for medicinal
