FIRST LEGAL MARIJUANA STRAIN CREATED IN VALENCIA WITH HIGH MEDICAL POTENTIAL

The company Hemp Trading in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia, have developed the first legal variety of marijuana, without psychoactive components and with high potential to treat diseases such as Crohn´s, colon cancer, glaucoma, Parkinson´s and Alzheimer´s.

The achievement has been to develop a variety that blocks some steps of the biosynthetic pathway of cannabinoids, avoiding the formation of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - an illegal and psychoactive component - and increasing the accumulation of cannabigerol (CBG), a cannabinoid with great medicinal potential and until now it was residual in the plant.

The CBG is the first cannabinoid that forms in the marijuana plant. Hence, it is considered the "cannabis stem cell", being essential for the formation of THC and cannabidiol (CBD), two of the cannabinoids with greater presence. As the plant grows, and as a consequence of chemical reactions mediated by enzymes involved in the biosynthetic process, CBG is transformed into THC, CBD and other minority cannabinoids. Therefore, the CBG practically disappears, explains Salvador Soler, a researcher at the Comav Institute of the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

As a result of the research work of the UPV, one of the only five entities in Spain that have a license for the cultivation of cannabis for scientific purposes, not only has the THC been eliminated, but the concentration of CBG has been increased. Currently, industrial hemp, as well as most European cannabis varieties, tend to accumulate a percentage of THC above the legal (0.2%).

"Thanks to this development we obtain completely legal plants that reach CBG levels above 15%, when the usual is 0.1% -0.5%", says the CEO of the Hemp Trading company, Ernesto Llosá. "Until now the CBG present in the cannabis strains was residual because it was mainly transformed into other cannabinoids", adds the Valencian businessman.

The CBG is the great unknown in the marijuana plant precisely because it is found in small quantities and there is hardly room for further experimentation and research for medicinal use, as has been done with THC or CBD. "But thanks to this development, the CBG can be obtained massively, opening the door to large-scale production in a legal manner, as well as doing more tests to evaluate its medicinal properties", continues Llosá.

In addition, the CBG extraction process requires less purification than CBD, the other non-psychoactive medicinal component of cannabis that is now booming. As explained by Llosá, "the plants with CBD contain a fraction of THC that has to be separated and discarded in the purification process, in our case, the CBG leaves pure without the presence of other cannabinoids, that is to say, we assure that it is free THC, therefore, guarantees the absence of a psychoactive component".

For now, the company is in the process of registration of the new variety and has not yet defined its marketing process, but this plant is a revulsive for the cannabis sector and is a great attraction for pharmacists interested in exploiting the medicinal properties of cannabis legally, as well as for industrial use.

Broadly speaking, the medicinal properties of CBG are similar to those of CBD. Several scientific studies such as the one published by the "British Journal of Pharmacology" (Taming THC: potential cannabis synergy and phytocannabinoid-terpenoid entourage effects) indicate that CBG reduces pain, reduces inflammation that produces some diseases such as Crohn´s disease, is a great inducer of sleep and has antidepressant properties. On the other hand, CBG inhibits the growth of cancer cells, helping to slow the progression of colon cancer. In addition, the CBG could be a powerful ally for the treatment of glaucoma, since it reduces intraocular pressure.

It is not the first time that the Hemp Trading company collaborates with the UPV in cannabis scientific research projects. In fact, the previous project used hybridization techniques to obtain plants that maximize CBD production without exceeding 0.2% THC, the legal limit to be grown in Spain. To do this, through the use of varietal crosses, the ability to produce CBD, more typical of cannabis, is transferred to plants with a high cannabinoid content, without altering their high resin production, which is where cannabinoids accumulate.
